
Super Bowl XLIX
On Sunday, February 1, the 49th annual Super Bowl took place. The Seattle Seahawks played the New England Patriots in Glendale, Arizona, a neutral territory. It was a close game with quite a few spectacular plays keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
The Seahawks won the coin toss, and deferred, putting them on defense. At 6:30 p.m., it was time for kickoff. During the Patriots' opening drive, Seahawks player Jeremy Lane intercepted the ball near the Patriots' goal line and suffered a left wrist injury. By the end of the first quarter, both teams were still tied zero to zero.

At the start of the second quarter, a touchdown was scored by the Patriots' Brandon LaFell. After a long catch from Chris Matthews, Seahawks' Marshawn Lynch scored a touchdown for his team in retaliation. The last few minutes of the first half were the most intense; both teams scored a touchdown in this short time. With only 31 seconds left, the Patriots' Rob Gronkowski scored a touchdown. Just two seconds before the half ended, Matthews scored a touchdown for the Seahawks, making the end of half score tied at 14 to 14.
The Pepsi Halftime Show was its usual extravaganza, featuring pop singer Katy Perry and guest stars Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott. The show had special effects and backup dancers, including people dressed as sharks performing with Perry. Perry arrived riding a huge metal lion with people carrying lanterns around on the field.
For the second half of the Super Bowl, the Seahawks received the ball on offense. This was followed by a successful opening drive for the Seahawks, leading to a field goal by kicker Steven Hauschka and their first lead of the night. During the Patriots' possession of the ball, Seahawks' Bobby Wagner intercepted it from them, leading to a touchdown by Doug Baldwin. This was the last of the third quarter excitement. It was followed by both teams failing to get first downs in the last minutes of the third quarter and lead to and of quarter score of 24 to 14 Seahawks.
At the start of the fourth quarter, the Patriots acquired the ball. The Seahawks did not get a first down, but were not able to prevent the Patriots getting one. The Patriots got possession of the ball and receiver Danny Almendola scored a touchdown. Their next drive also resulted in a touchdown by a throw from Tom Brady to Julian Edelman. With two minutes left on the clock, the Seahawks went for the winning touchdown. Jermaine Kearse made a catch that amazed everyone. At the Seahawks's one yard line, Russell Wilson threw the ball intended for Ricardo Lockette, which was intercepted by the Patriots' rookie Malcolm Butler. This play lead to the final score of 28 to 24 Patriots. Angry and upset, Seahawks players started a fight with Patriots players. Referees quickly broke up the fight to avoid destroying the Patriots' victory.
After the game, the Vince Lombardi trophy was presented to the Patriots. Brady also received his third career MVP award, along with a brand new 2015 Chevy Colorado. This was a successful end to an intense game.
