New York City is known for many attractions, but one of the most well-known features is Broadway, home to musical theatre. During May, both the band and the choir took advantage of our close proximity to this magical city to see a musical.

On Saturday, May 2nd, the Marching Zephyr Band (MZB) boarded a charter bus to New York City for a fun-filled day in the city. Upon arrival in NYC, the band enjoyed a ride on a yacht called the ZEPHYR. From the yacht, they saw the Statue of Liberty and other famous landmarks.

Next, the MZB enjoyed lunch from food carts in Battery Park, then walked to the 9/11 Museum. They took in the view from the Empire State Building, saw Rockefeller Center, and St. Patrick's Cathedral. The MZB ate dinner at Ellen's Stardust Diner, where the waiters and waitresses sang as they served food.

Their last stop was the eight o'clock showing of The Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theater.

"The musical [was my favorite part] because it was cool to see, especially since I never saw a Broadway musical before," says freshman DJ Rivas.

Two weeks later, on May 17th, a group of choir and theatre students took a trip into NYC on a charter bus. Upon arrival in the city, these students were allowed free time to explore New York City.

"I love the city. You just get swept up with the crowd, and it's an amazing feeling. Every time I go there, it feels like the first time. It's just an incredible feeling; [it] makes you realize there's a lot bigger things in life than just yourself," says freshman Alyssa Pringle.

These students saw Matilda! on Broadway at three o'clock at Shubert Theatre. Matilda! is loosely based on the book by Roald Dahl and movie. the musical follows a little girl named Matilda who is incredibly smart for her age and has an extraordinary imagination. She decides to use these things to take a stand and try to change her destiny.

Once the production of Matilda! was over, the choir and theater students had the option to eat dinner at John's Pizza or at a restaurant of their choosing.

After this exciting day in New York City, the group of students returned to Whitehall on their charter bus.
